Chapter 11: Chemical BondsTest Day: January 9th, 2008 (Wednesday) No. of Points: UNKNOWN Quote: Chapter Summary- The properties of compounds are generally different from those of the elements they contain.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - A chemical formula for a compound indicates the composition of a unit of the compound.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - Chemical bonding occurs because atoms of most elements become more stable by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - Atoms like having 8 electrons in the outermost shell.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - Ionic bonds between atoms are formed by the attraction between ions. Covalent bonds are formed by the sharing of electrons.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - Ionic bonding produces charged particles called ions. Covalent bonding produces units called molecules.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - The unequal sharing of electrons produces compounds that contain polar bonds, and the equal sharing of electrons produces nonpolar compounds.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - An oxidation number indicates how many electrons an atom has gained, lost, or shared when bonding with other atoms.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - In the formula of an ionic compound, the element or ion with the positive number is written first, followed by the one with the negative oxidation number.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - The name of a binary compound is derived from the names of the two elements that compose the compound.[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]
 - A hydrate is a compound that has water chemically attached to its ions and written into its formula[/*:m:6cyr1c4i]

Additional Things: UNKNOWN. Discuss about the test; ask questions, etc.

For those of us who are having problems, can you explain how to balance binary compound equations?
  ...Thanks.
